Chunghwa Telecom Co. (CHT)<CHT>, Taiwan's largest telecoms and internet service provider, expects to see 20% revenue from overseas in five years, Chairman and Chief Executive Ho Chan Tan said over an interview. Ho said CHT is seeking good opportunities to invest in Vietnam and Thailand because of the increasingly fierce competition and a nearly saturated market in Taiwan. Currently, CHT is considering to acquire stake in the mobile phone sector of Vietnam Post and Telecommunications Corp. (VNPT), a Vietnam's state-run telecom firm. The Taiwan's company announced earlier that it has established a joint venture with Vietnamese military-backed operator Viettel to provide internet data center service in Vietnam. This venture, which is scheduled to begin operations in the third quarter of 2008, was CHT's first investment project outside of Taiwan. Ho also revealed that Chuanghwa plans to establish a joint venture with a Thailand company in near future, but declined to give any detailed information. Source:China Knowledge |
