China Mobile Communications Corp, the parent company of Hong Kong-listed China Mobile Ltd, has invested 14.2 bln yuan so far to install a 3G cellphone network based on homegrown TD-SCDMA in eight Chinese cities, said Wang Jianzhou, who is chairman of both companies. The parent firm has installed 14,300 base stations, including 3,400 in Beijing and 2,600 in Shanghai, Wang told reporters after China Mobile's annual general meeting. On restructuring of the Chinese telecommunications industry, Wang said preparatory work is under way but the company has yet to receive official notice of the start date. Mainland media say the government will announce its plans as early as May 17. Wang denied that the company is interested in acquiring African telecom operator MTN but said China Mobile does pay attention to the African market. He China Mobile entered into an agreement with Softbank and Vodafone last month for the establishment of a joint-venture innovation laboratory.
