With full speed development of 3G services, China Unicom determined to upgrade HSPA + in 56 key cities before the 5.17 Telecommunication Day in 2011, to provide a better experience of 3G services for users, and further establish its leadership in 3G.
It is reported that for the network upgrade, China Unicom will choose several cities to deploy PTN packet transport network to solve the high-bandwidth needs of 3G wireless backhaul.
In the first half of 2010, China Unicom had finished the laboratory testing of packet transport technology, and since the second half of 2010, China Unicom had began the field testing of packet transport technology in Beijing, Dalian, Guangzhou and other cities. Alcatel-Lucent, Ericsson, Huawei, ZTE, FiberHome, Cisco, Nokia Siemens Networks and other major manufacturers were involved in the testing, which as the basis for formally introducing the PTN networking now.
