China Unicom leading after a full week of number portability

Updated:2010/12/6 10:27

After a full week of number portability, the local operators in Tianjin and Hainan have used frequent tactics to compete for the customers. On 1st December, media quoted sources that a week after the pilot operation of number portability: the subscribers who transferred into China Unicom reached 3000, and the subscribers who transferred from China Unicom were about 1000. Most of these transference happened between China Mobile and China Unicom, the subscribers whether transferred into China Telecom or transferred from China Telecom are both tiny.

Reporters last week showed the data without official confirmed that on Nov. 22 in Tianjin, the first day of number portability, about 80 users transferred from China Unicom successfully, of which, 90% of the users transferred into China Mobile; And 160 users transferred into China Unicom, of which, 95% came from China Mobile. The most users who transferred from China Unicom chose the new operator's 2G network; and half of the users who transferred into China Unicom chose China Unicom's 3G network.

On Nov. 29, according to a statistical data obtained from an MIIT's stakeholders, the data showed that 1/3 Tianjin users who made the number portability transferred into China Unicom's 3G network. As the end of statistics, about 110 users transferred from China Unicom, of which, nearly 100 users transferred into China Mobile; the total users transferred from China Mobile and China Telecom into China Unicom were about 200, of which 190 users from China Mobile, and more than 50% of users transferred into China Unicom's 3G network.

On November 30th, a local media in Tianjin obtained information from the operators that the number of users transferred into China Unicom is twice than transferred into China Mobile, and 95% of the users transferred into China Unicom were from China Mobile.

These data obtained from different periods and different sources. It is similar with the industry's expectation, China Unicom, with the 3G advantages, has benefit from number portability.

Because the number portability in Tianjin is a two-way mode of transference and Hainan is one-way mode, so Tianjin became the main battlefield of the operators' fighting. So far, the data from Tianjin showed that more than half users transferred into China Unicom chose the WCDMA network, which indicates that China Unicom has advantages on WCDMA network quality and attractive mobile terminals. Researchers said that the current operators retained the users by tariff concessions, for example, China Mobile promised to return calls to retain one year users, it is expected whether the new initiatives will appear or not in the future.
