Huawei Technologies Co Ltd, the world's second-largest telecom equipment maker, and Uralsvyazinform, a global communications service provider and a subsidiary of Svyazinvest, signed a memorandum on the deployment and testing of a next-generation network.
Huawei said in a statement that the network is an all-IP network, or one that is based solely on the Internet Protocol. It relies on IP Multimedia Subsystem technology, has a packet-switched network as its core and can transmit different types of traffic, such as voice, multimedia and video.
The IMS project is the largest project of its kind ever to be implemented in Russia or the Commonwealth of Independent States, the statement said.
The two companies will conduct a number of tests, including tests of the mobile network, the fixed network and the broadband data transmission network. Another test will focus on the functionality of the joint operation between Huawei's IMS network and equipment from other manufacturers.
The final decision regarding construction of a commercial all-IP network will be determined based on the test results.
