China Unicom to launch Android-powered Uphone soon

Updated:2009/6/9 14:22

China Unicom, while negotiating with Apple for the distribution of iPhone 3G in China, is expected to launch an Android-powered smartphone, the Uphone, which is built using its in-house developed UniPlus platform, in June or July, according to a Chinese-language Commercial Times report.

Meanwhile, two 2G Ophones – one from Dopod and the other from Lenovo – are also expected to hit the China market soon, said the paper, noting that Ophones refer to Android-powered smartphones built on the Mobile Open System (MOS) developed by China Mobile.

China Mobile itself plans to launch its first 3G-enabled Ophone in the fourth quarter of this year, the paper added.
