Shanghai Telecom, the branch of China Telecom in Shanghai, has started to release mobile phone numbers beginning with 189 as of Thursday, which are especially reserved for the CDMA network. 
This is China Telecom's first CDMA numbers after its takeover of China Unicom's CDMA business.

Under the brand of Tianyi, the 189 numbers enable their users to get access to the Internet.

Zhang Weihua, Shanghai Telecom's general manager said that broadband users in Shanghai had exceeded 3.3 million. The use of Tianyi handsets and the 189 mobile phone numbers would enable users to enjoy the fruits of technological innovations and in turn promote the development of the Internet.
