China Unicom is to completely stop operating the CDMA business on December 9, 2008 when some of its provincial units finish delivering CDMA network equipment to China Unicom provincial subsidiaries.
It indicates the accomplishment of China Unicom's nationwide delivery of CDMA network equipment to China Telecom in line with the proposal for telecom industry regrouping. By now, China Unicom has gained CNY 30.7 billion, or 70% of the payment, from the CDMA business disposal.
The CDMA business, which was launched by China Unicom seven years ago and was categorized as a non-continuing operation because of the disposal in the third quarter of 2008, generated CNY 1.68 billion profits for the telecom operator in the July-September 2008.
China Mobile witnessed its CDMA user number drop to 42.358 million at the end of August after losing 811,000 users in consecutive two months. It lost 413,000 CDMA users in July, 398,000 in August, and 626,000 in September.
