Second-Phase CMMB Network to Cover 137 Chinese Cities
Updated:2008/11/25 15:33
The SARFT underlined that the newly-purchased CMMB terminals should have CA chips. And it suggested CMMB terminal companies actively team up with those domestic chipmakers that are able to independently design chips, such as Founder and Spreadtrum Communications Inc. (Nasdaq: SPRD). By now, the CMMB industry chain has been licked into shape and it has had more than 200 corporate members. The CMMB standard system is controlled by domestic companies. During the Beijing Olympic Games, as many as 37 cities across the country enjoyed the CMMB mobile TV service. Although its signal inside rooms is relatively stable, the signal coverage outside rooms is obviously not good enough. Many electrics malls in Beijing, Shanghai, and Shenzhen have partially made up the coverage. The second-phase network will improve the indoor signal coverage step by step, according to Mrs. Wang Xiaojie, chief of the Science and Technology Bureau under the SARFT. CMMB is a mobile television and multimedia standard developed and specified in China by the SARFT. It is based on the satellite and terrestrial interactive multi-service infrastructure (STiMi), developed by TiMiTech, a company formed by the Chinese Academy of Broadcasting Science. Many companies have had chips that support CMMB standard. CMMB service can provides 25 video and 30 radio channels with some additional data channels.
