Big Chinese telecom carriers are all laying the groundwork for the 3G era. China Telecom lately has put an end to the new round of CDMA equipment procurement. China Mobile is about to kick off the second stage of TD-SCDMA equipment procurement soon.
Though China Unicom has not got the 3G license from the Chinese telecom regulators, it is in full sail testing its WCDMA service.
China Unicom has started WCDMA trial networks in seven major cities, they are Shanghai, Shenzhne, Foshan, Liuzhou, Zhengzhou, Baoding, and Wuxi, according to people close to the company.
Some media report that the TD network in Shanghai consists of 60 base stations. However, insiders say there are about 100 base stations in each of the seven cities.
In early last month, China Unicom began inviting public bidding for WCDMA contracts. Ericsson, Nokia Siemens, Huawei, ZTE, Alcatel Lucent, and Newpostcom have submitted their bidding documents.
