Freescale Helps Switch On TD-SCDMA Networks in China

Updated:2008/11/6 09:50

Freescale Semiconductors recently decided to add momentum to the build-out of China’s Time Division Synchronous Code Division Multiple Access (TD-SCDMA) networks. With its extensive portfolio of microprocessor, DSP (Digital Signal Processor ) and RF (Radio Frequency) technologies for wireless infrastructure equipment, Freescale will support the country in its technological development.

“Freescale’s extensive semiconductor portfolio gives top equipment manufacturers the essential building blocks they need for the rapid deployment of TD-SCDMA,” said Dr. Wang Jing, secretary general of the TD-SCDMA Technology Forum.

“We are pleased that world class semiconductor companies such as Freescale are applying their focus, insight and technology to help bring TD-SCDMA to life,” Jing added.
While the China TD-SCDMA Technology Forum states that TD-SCDMA deployments should be completed in 30 Chinese cities by the end of 2008, such deployments would result in a nationwide penetration rate of almost 15 percent with close to 3 million users by the end of 2009.

Additionally, there has been accelerated growth in the adoption of the Freescale technology for TD-SCDMA networks. Such growth was recently noticed when Chinese chipset vendor, Spreadtrum Communications  integrated Freescale’s MC34673 battery charger IC (Integrated Circuit) into its TD-SCDMA 8800D platform.

Apart from this, numerous other TD-SCDMA equipment manufacturers have leveraged StarCore technology-based DSPs and have also deployed Freescale’s PowerQUICC processors in country-wide TD-SCDMA installations.

“Freescale maintains a deep portfolio of DSP, microprocessor and RF technologies ideal for the creation of highly advanced TD-SCDMA equipment,” said Kai Wang, vice president of sales and marketing and general manager of the Asia-Pacific Region for Freescale.

“The breadth and quality of our product lines are helping us gain significant traction in TD-SCDMA markets. We look forward to continued growth as we play a key role in the build-out of China’s TD-SCDMA infrastructure.” Wang added.

With operations in China since 1992, Freescale is among the first few U.S.-based corporations to have established semiconductor design and manufacturing facilities in the Chinese regions. With operations in the fields of design, research, manufacturing and sales in over 30 countries, Freescale is a private company based in Austin, Texas and has had worldwide sales of almost $5.7 billion in the year 2007.
