China (mainland) – China Mobile will be working with the Taiwan-based High Tech Computer (HTC), maker of T-Mobile G1, on developing an Android-based TD-SCDMA handset, according to reports from Taiwan media.
China Mobile has yet to confirm the news, but it is expected that the TD-SCDMA phone based on the Android platform will be different from the earlier G1 products from HTC. The Android-platform handset based on the open mobile system in China was originally set for release by the end of 2008. However, the launch was tentatively re-scheduled on Q2 2009, due to delay in completion of OMS applications and the decision to cooperate with HTC was finalized.
The Open Handset Alliance is a group of more than 30 technology and mobile companies working together to boost innovation in mobile technologies. The same group, of which Google is a major player, was responsible for developing the Android.
