China's ZTE has shown off the world’s first EDGE/TD-SCDMA mobile handset. The U990 is ZTE’s third high-end TD-SCDMA mobile handset model and will soon be available on the market. The two other previous models were the U980 and U981.
The new U990 has a high-speed transmission rate of up to 2.8 Mbps, the fastest transmission speed among the TD-SCDMA terminals available in the industry, and supports dual mode TD-SCDMA/EDGE allowing seamless transitions between the two networks.
The U990 handset runs on Windows Mobile 6.0 operating system and is the first ZTE handset integrated with a Microsoft OS.

ZTE is the largest single supplier of TD-SCDMA based 3G phones to China Mobile for its 3G trials currently under way.
