China to Guide Telecoms Balance

China Mobile Ltd., the nation's biggest mobile operator, is expected to learn more about the power of China's central government, its actual controller, which has long been in an effort for balance among the telecoms names in the country. Presently, the company held a 60% share of the Chinese mobile telecoms market in terms of the number of mobile phone users. Besides, most medium- and high-end cellphone users are its consumers. But China Unicom Limited, with a just 24% share, is not strong enough to be its main rival in the arena. China Telecom Corporation Ltd. and China Netcom Group (Hong Kong) Corporation Ltd. together has snatched only a 16% share with their PHSes, the portable fixed-line phones. In 2005, the government initiated the development of the technologies for mobile phone users to switch the telecoms networks at their service without changing their retained SIM codes. And insiders said that the technologies would be applied in Tianjin and Shenzhen in October 2008, an example for other cities across the country to follow in the next year. A survey by telecoms operators shows that 8% of the existing cellphone users plan to switch the networks after the application of the technologies, which will cut their expenses in the shift to a large extent. Besides, on May 24, the government announced that it would carry out dissymmetrical regulations over the operators.
