Huawei reports UMTS, GSM shipments double

Huawei's shipments of its GSM and UMTS transceivers showed more than 100% growth in the first half of 2008 compared to the same period last year, a Total Telecom report said.

The Chinese vendor said that so far this year it has already delivered 800,000 GSM TRXs, more than the total number of shipments for the whole of 2007, the report said.

The firm also said about "400,000 TRXs were delivered in China and India alone."

The company also said it has won 25 new commercial UMTS/HSPA contracts in the first half of 2008 bringing its total to 111 to date.

Huawei may soon have an opportunity to increase its tally of contracts and grow its shipments to China and India with both countries making headway with their respective 3G plans, the Total Telecom report said.

As part of its industry shake-up, China has stated that it will use W-CDMA as well as cdma2000 and its home-grown 3G standard TD-SCDMA.

Meanwhile India's Department of Telecommunications (DoT) announced at the beginning of August its long-awaited plans to auction 3G spectrum – more good news for network vendors eyeing growth opportunities in emerging markets.
