Beijing Netcom 8Mbps Broadband Sees Slow Adoption

Updated:2008/8/7 13:06

Tags:ADSL | broadband

Zhao Jidong, deputy CEO of China Netcom  and general manager of Beijing Netcom, recently stated that Beijing Netcom has less than 1,000 users of its 8M ADSL broadband service.

Netcom's 8M broadband service uses ADSL2+ technology, but given the length of time needed to deploy the technology, there are many places lacking the ability to install or upgrade to high-speed ADSL (ADSL2+). 8M broadband service can also be offered only to post-pay subscribers, making the service unusable for residents of Beijing lacking an official Beijing residence permit.

According to Zhao Jidong, 70% of ADSL users in Beijing have a 1M connection.

Editor’s Note: On May 17, 2008, Beijing Netcom launched its 8Mbps broadband service, costing RMB 498 per month or RMB 4,980 annually. For more background on this topic, please see “Beijing Netcom Launches 8Mbps Broadband Service”, MD 5/19/08 issue.
