Qualcomm Inc. has licensed its wireless handset technology to a Chinese telecom that will manufacture and sell Qualcomm handset chips and modem cards in the growing China market.
The deal announced Aug. 5 allows Shanghai HuaQin Telecom Technology Co. to make and sell CDMA2000 subscriber units. Qualcomm in exchange will receive an unspecified amount of royalties and increase its market share in China.

HuaQin was founded in 2005. The agreement allows the company to introduce third-generation wireless connectivity, called 3G CDMA2000, into the fast-growing wireless market in China, said Marvin Blecker, president of Qualcomm Technology Licensing.
“The development of the CDMA wireless industry in China is providing a great deal of growth opportunities to local companies and operators,” said Blecker.
“HuaQin is excited by the opportunities made available by Qualcomm's 3G CDMA technology,” said Wensheng Qiu, president of HuaQin.
Qualcomm shares were up 6 cents at $55.78 in afternoon trading.
