Since China Unicom sold its CDMA network to China Telecom in line with the telecom restructuring plan of the Chinese authorities, it has been upgrading its GSM network and extending the coverage of international roaming of GSM network.
By the end of June, China Unicom had completed upgrading GSM to GRPS networks in 31 provinces and municipalities. All users of China Unicom pre-paid or post-paid now can enjoy GRPS service without additional subscription.
China Unicom said on July 27 that by mid July it had kicked off GPRS-based international roaming service in 12 countries and regions such as the U.S., Switzerland, Luxembourg, Belgium, South Korea, Sri Lanka, Australia, France, Hong Kong, Taiwan, and Macao.
China Unicom notes that with completion of the GRPS upgrading, the capacity and voice quality of its network will see a substantial increase. In addition, it has extended its international roaming service to 201 countries.
