Independent 3G standard quickens its internationalization
Updated:2008/7/29 10:45
Recently, the test bed for TD-SCDMA, China's independent 3G (the third generation mobile communication technology) international standard, in South Korea has been upgraded to HSDPA (High Speed Downlink Packet Access). Chen Shanzhi, General Engineer of Datang Telecom Technology Co., Ltd, ("Datang Telecom" for short), told the reporter that the project had passed the test for acceptance and a favorable effect had been achieved. Experts pointed out that the cooperation with SK Telecom of South Korea was only a springboard for the development of such an independent standard toward industrialization and internationalization. The increasingly enhanced international cooperation would promote the domestic industrialization and market orientation of TD-SCDMA as an independent standard in China. Meanwhile, it would be propitious to the construction of a platform for international cooperation on TD-SCDMA, thus driving TD-SCDMA to march into the international market. Drive domestic business to be mature Since phone numbers were distributed for the trial commercial use of TD-SCDMA on April 1, 2008, the speech quality and business provision of the independent 3G standard had been concerned by various parties. "The cooperation with SK Telecom will help to drive domestic 3G business to become mature rapidly." Chen Shanzhi expressed. SK Telecom, headquartered in South Korea, is one of the well-known telecom operation enterprises in the world. For the moment, SK Telecom is operating two networks for the use of 3G technology for commercial purposes: WCDMA and CDMA2000 (the two ones of the third generation mobile communication international standards), in South Korea. The cooperation between the two parties will make for the interconnection and intercommunication tests between China's TD-SCDMA as a 3G international standard and other mobile communication international standards of the third generation. At the same time, the cooperation between the two parties will provide TD-SCDMA with more and differentiated services and businesses and elevate the competitiveness of TD-SCDMA, enabling China's independent internationalized standard to provide better services for 2008 Beijing Olympic Games. As disclosed, the cooperation between Datang Telecom and SK Telecom started in 2006. In August 2006, a Memorandum of Understanding on jointly developing TD-SCDMA was inked between the National Development and Reform Commission of P.R.C. and SK Telecom of South Korea. In accordance with the content of the understanding memo, SK Telecom invested and established China's first overseas TD-SCDMA test bed in Seoul, South Korea in April 2007. Till now, remarkable achievements have been made on the two parties' cooperation on tests of the TD-SCDMA standard, and the speech connections within TD-SCDMA network and between different 3G standards have been accomplished. The two parties have achieved such new businesses as mobile games, satellite orientation and video upload on the 3G network so far as the development of TD-SCDMA network is concerned. Meanwhile, relying on experiences on upgrading the test bed in South Korea, Datang Telecom has also succeeded in the upgrade testing for the function of HSDPA of TD-SCDMA test bed in Shanghai and Guangzhou within only over a month, having had the transmission speed enhanced for the data of TD-SCDMA network and providing better experiences in using the network for domestic subscribers. A springboard leading to internationalization Experts indicated that depending on SK Telecom's experiences in operating the 3G network and offering 3G network services in South Korea, the business applications of TD-SCDMA would not only be further enriched but also a foundation would be laid for the extensive application and popularization of TD-SCDMA in the overseas market in the future. As a matter of fact, the telecommunication charges for mobile phones are rather low in some countries; so is the ARPU (Average Revenue Per User) value. However, the MOU (Minutes of Usage) value is very high, so the operators are required to decrease the cost of network establishment greatly. Chen Shanzhi disclosed that, "Compared with other 3G international standards, TD-SCDMA has an obvious advantage in such an aspect." It is reported that besides the test bed in South Korea, the promotion for TD-SCDMA is also being conducted actively in other overseas markets. "We are planning to jointly drive the overseas sales of TD-SCDMA." Zhen Caiji, Chairman of Datang Telecom Technology Co., Ltd, one of the core manufacturers promoting the TD-SCDMA standard, said that the two parties had communicated with the operators in such areas as Africa and Southeast Asia and had obtained positive feedbacks, and it is expected to enlarge the market for TD-SCDMA in countries other than China and South Korea. ,China Mobile eases into 3G switch (2008-10-9) ,DoT under fire over 3G spectrum rental charges (2008-10-9) ,Qualcomm Says Thailand Needs at Least Three 3G Networks (2008-10-8) ,China Mobile partners HTC to develop TD-SCDMA Android handsets (2008-10-7) ,Juniper Bidding on USA 3G Network Upgrade (2008-10-7) ,Huawei Wins Czech 3G and GSM Network Contract (2008-10-7) ,MTS Launches Trial 3G Network in Uzbekistan (2008-10-7) ,China Mobile Reveals "Three Nos" Plan for TD-SCDMA (2008-10-7) ,BSNL dials BlackBerry, Apple for 3G rollout (2008-10-6) ,ZTE Unveils World¨s First HSDPA TD-SCDMA Mobile Handset (2008-10-1) ,ZTE Shows of EDGE/TD-SCDMA Mobile Phone (2008-9-29) ,Apple¨s iPhone 3G Production Target Plunges to 14 Million (2008-9-28) ,Samsung selects RFMD PAs to support new 3G handsets (2008-9-27) ,3G service from BSNL in Orissa by December (2008-9-27) ,Apple selling unlocked iPhone 3G in Hong Kong (2008-9-27) ,Can You Deal With an iPhone Without 3G and WiFi?
