With the Beijing Olympics just around the corner, China is speeding up efforts to promote the TD-SCDMA network, its home-grown 3G mobile telecom standard. TD-SCDMA will be the only third-generation standard used during the Games.
China Mobile already has numbers available to the public for commercial trials. Subscribers using several cellphone brands, including LG and ZET, can take part in the trial.
According to reconstruction plans for the country's telecommunication sector, the TD-SCDMA license is expected to be awarded to China Mobile. The company says it will offer at least 20-thousand 3G handsets for rent during the Olympic Games. The service will also be available to foreign visitors who rent special mobile phones.
