New China Unicom, which is built on the basis of the merger of China Unicom and China Netcom, plans to lay off half of the existing staffs in headquarters, that is, about 600 employees, in the final, said an industrial insider.
China Unicom is working on designing the organization structure after China Netcom is incorporated into it, and it has decided to re-arrange the staffs of the two companies according to the department functions rather than the hearsay two operating units for fixed-line network and mobile communication network each.
Before the merger, there are 27 departments in China Unicom and 21 departments in China Netcom, with more than 50 percent of the functional departments overlapping.
The new company will focus on developing full-service rather than developing mobile network and fixed-line parallelly.
