China Telecom Group has opened a tender for 10 mln CDMA handsets, with bids sought from 23 manufacturers, the official Shanghai Securities News reported, citing sources close to the matter.

The report said low-end handsets will make up the bulk of the order as China Telecom seeks to make subscribers to its Personal Handy-phone System (PHS) service shift to low-end CDMA plans.

The report added that China Telecom also launched a 17 bln yuan tender for upgrading the CDMA network it recently acquired.

China Telecom is expected to invest between 27 bln yuan to 30 bln yuan in the CDMA business this year.

China Telecom, formerly an all-fixed line company, took over China Unicom's CDMA business in June.
