Chinese handset production increased 7.4% year-on-year to reach 242 million units in the first five months of 2008, reports xinhuanet.com citing data from the Ministry of Industry and Information Technology (MIIT). China accounted for approximately 40% of worldwide handset production last year with the manufacture of 548 million phones. There were 592 million handset users in China by the end of May.
