Chinese equipment manufacturer Huawei Technologies has signed a deal with Kenya’s largest cellular operator Safaricom for the provision of 3G infrastructure. The financial terms of the deal were not revealed, though Safaricom did say that it had invested a total of USD30 million in its 3G licence fees and network equipment to date. ‘3G is the future. We need state-of-the-art products with the highest speeds,’ said Safaricom CEO Michael Joseph in a statement. Safaricom launched its first 3G and 3.5G services in selected areas of Nairobi and Mombasa earlier this year.
