China Telecom has established an R&D lab for IPTV technologies at its Shanghai research facility.
The lab will work to establish technological criteria in line with international standards for Chinese IPTV companies, offering testing and validation services to IPTV platform and terminal providers.
The company collaborated in 2005 with Shanghai Media Group (SMG) to start IPTV trials in 17 Chinese cities including display media services, live broadcast, rebroadcast, and information browsing.
The company's IPTV subscriber base reached nearly 1 million in May, and the company aims to reach the 2 million mark by year end.
The Chinese government has not issued IPTV licenses directly to telecoms operators, and IPTV services are still jointly operated by telecoms carriers and IPTV broadcasters.
