Sibirtelecom and Huawei Technologies, the leading manufacturer of telecommunications equipment in China, have started building a next generation Internet network using Huawei's GPON equipment, Sibirtelecom said in a press release.

The Gigabit Passive Optical Network (GPON) technology will allow the installation of a fiber optic cable directly into the apartment of a subscriber who will be able to have a 2.5 GB/sec channel, which is 100 times faster than the ADSL2+ access. The implementation of the GPON technology will enable the provision of the Triple-Play service: Internet, VoIP, IPTV and CATV, while the high transmission speed will allow to view several high-definition television channels at the same time.

Expanding the subscriber access zone will enable to significantly increase the capacity and the transmission range of the existing network infrastructure, the press release said.

The installation of the GPON equipment will become the first project of that kind implemented by Huawei for Sibirtelecom. Among the advantages of the technology is a low cost, high quality of service and technological characteristics.

"I am certain that this technology will meet our expectations in light of the development of digital television across the Siberia and will ensure the high quality of the video signal transmission," Sibirtelecom's General Director Alexander Isayev was quoted as saying in the press release.

The key part of the project will be implemented in August. The companies are planning to commission the system in October. The testing of the GPON equipment will begin in Novosibirsk in July 2008.
