SK telecom interested in buying shares of China Telecom

So Jin Woo, president of Korea-based SK Telecom Co., Ltd., released on June 15 that his company is interested in equity participation in China Telecom (0728.HK; CHA. NYSE) after it finished the merger with China Unicom?s CDMA business, according to Dow Jones Newswires.

SK Telecom held 6.6 percent equity of China Unicom, which decreased to 3.7 percent after the reshuffling of China?s telecom sector. China Telecom?s purchasing of CDMA business from China Unicom was included in the regrouping plan.

So said he had not contacted the management of China Telecom, but he wished to seek opportunities for cooperation upon the completion of the restructuring.

According to China?s supervision system, the proportion of foreign investment in Chinese telecom companies is not allowed to exceed 49 percent of the total.
