Nigeria: MTN Launches DSTV Mobile Technology

MTN Nigeria has formally introduced its DSTV Mobile Television services to its subscribers.
Speaking at the launch, which also featured live demonstration of the technology on specially designed mobile phones, Mr. Bola Akingbade, Chief Marketing Officer, MTN Nigeria described the development as "a practical demonstration of our leadership in innovative telecoms services." The service uses the world acclaim Digital Video Broadcast-Handheld (DVB-H) technology, a standard that allows for the digital terrestrial broadcast of live television channels to a mobile phone using a broadcast network infrastructure via broadcast frequency spectrum. He said the offer, with its unique satellite broadcasting capabilities would ensure that subscribers do not miss their favourite TV programmes as they could watch sport, music, carton and news programme among others anytime and anywhere they are from the comfort of their mobile phones. Subscribers are however, required to buy the specially designed ZTE phones and SIM cards, as they would be unable to access the service with existing handsets. Akingbade said customers would be able to access 10 televisions channels namely, Supersports, African Magic, CNN, Carton Network, NTA2 Channel 5, Channel O among other are currently of the service. He said MTN has entered into partnership with Multichoice to deliver the technology across its operations in Africa and the Middle East, stressing that the service is for all and sundry. "It is with a deep sense of pride that we launch the DSTV Mobile from MTN. As the country''s economy grows and cities expand rapidly, we need to ensure that technologies are available to meet the needs of busy lifestyles", said Mr. Collins Khumalo, Managing Director, Multichoice. According to him, the innovation, which would only be available for subscriber in both Lagos and Abuja for the time being would ensure that subscribers get up-to-date premium DSTV contents while they are on the move. "DSTV Mobile puts Nigeria at the forefront of technology today. It brings to Nigeria, one of the most anticipated consumer technologies across the world and it consolidates Nigeria''s technological leadership in the region," he stressed. He said the new offer would change Nigerians'' relationship with the television as they could now watch programmes on the move.
