BT Expands Public Wi-Fi Access in UK Businesses
Updated:2008/4/23 11:51
UK businesses can now turn their premises into Wi-Fi hotspots, expanding the range of services they offer to customers and visitors, and potentially creating a new revenue stream, thanks to an initiative from BT Business Total Broadband.
BT says that customer research highlights that more than a quarter (28%) of small businesses believe offering visitors access to telephones and desks improves relationships and ultimately, business. Only seven per cent however, currently offer Wi-Fi. The new service allows existing BT Business Total Broadband customers to create a separate secure channel in their Wi-Fi routers which can be offered for use to customers. They can also sell access if they prefer. Bill Murphy, managing director, BT Business, said: ^It is a real differentiator for businesses, offering the potential to deliver a prime business service to their visitors and dramatically increase the number of locations from which they can connect and do business as part of the BT Business Total Broadband community." The 170,000 existing BT Business Total Broadband customers with a BT Business 2700 Total Broadband Hub will be invited to switch the Wi-Fi hotspot feature on following a firmware upgrade this quarter. A new version of the BT Business Hub will be launched in July, with the hotspot capability already enabled and giving customers the choice to opt-out of the service.
