Ecuadorian operator Etapatelecom has contracted Chinese vendor Huawei to deploy a next generation network (NGN) covering Cuenca, Quito and Guayaquil, reports BNamericas quoting local paper El Mercurio. Etapatelecom plans to invest USD1.24 million in the deployment of the NGN network, providing internet, voice and value added services, and expects it to be operational by July this year. TeleGeography¨s GlobalComms says that Etapatelecom is owned by Cuenca-based municipal telco ETAPA, and offers internet, data and telephony services to business customers, under a national licence granted in late 2003, but had only 606 fixed line telephony customers across three towns at the end of 2007. The company says its main focus so far has been dial-up and broadband internet access, and its existing voice client base, served over rented infrastructure, will be migrated to the new NGN.
