Japan''s KDDI says building overseas data hubs

Updated:2008/3/13 10:54

Japan''s second-largest telecom carrier KDDI Corp said Wednesday it would build new data management centres in Britain, France and Singapore to assist Japanese businesses overseas.

KDDI said it will invest 25 billion yen (242 million dollars) by 2010 to equip the sites in Singapore, London and suburban Paris for Japanese firms transmitting data.

The company, which has been offering services since the 1980s for Japanese companies overseas, said the centres will allow better quality data management.

KDDI already operates data hubs in Britain, China, France, Hong Kong and the United States. It plans to expand as well to emerging economies including India, Vietnam, Russia and Poland.

The company has increasingly aimed to make overseas data centres a core part of its revenue amid intense competition at home in mobile phone service.

KDDI shares closed Wednesday up 22,000 yen or 3.7 percent at 623,000, outpacing a 1.6 percent rise by the benchmark Nikkei-225 index.
