Huawei and Qualcomm Commercially Test IMS Based CDMA2000 1x EV-DO VoIP

Updated:2007/11/15 11:08

Huawei and Qualcomm (News - Alert) have jointly completed testing of an overall solution for CDMA2000 1x EV-DO Rev.A access to the IP Multimedia Subsystem (IMS) network and announced the world''s first successful end-to-end Voice Over IP call in Shanghai.

Service providers can utilize EV-DO Rev.A with IMS with the benefit of an all-IP network and provide new services, including seamless roaming from fixed telephones to mobile handsets.

According to Huawei (News - Alert) , the testing included interoperability trials using Huawei''s 1xEV-DO Rev. A and IMS system, all-IP transmission system, CDMA IP BTS based on the UMB technology and devices enabled by Qualcomm''s MSM6800A chipset and IMS device client solution. The company said it believes the clear advantage of EV-DO Rev.A accessed IMS over traditional voice technologies in providing increased capacity and transmission savings.

Since the VoIP technology used in Huawei''s test is based entirely on the 3GPP2 standard, it provides high quality voice services, guarantees QoS, and allows the service provider to control charges and security, making it an operational mobile technology.

Frank Meng, president of Qualcomm Greater China said that the integration of IP in mobile networks has already become a development trend for future mobile networks. He added that this joint test is an important breakthrough in realizing commercial VoIP on a CDMA 2000 1x EV-DO Rev.A network.

Meng explained that his company will continue to cooperate closely with their partners in the wireless industry, including Huawei, by providing innovative and competitive products and solutions that support the global market.

^Huawei''s IMS is working toward all-IP development, helping service providers continue to integrate voice and new multimedia services, thus, benefiting consumers, while at the same time, fulfilling our promise to support our customers in increasing their market competitiveness, ̄ said Ding Yun, president of Huawei Core Networks in a statement.
