Backers of the China Digital Multimedia Broadcasting (CDMB), one of a handful of planned homegrown mobile TV specs in China, would allow handset makers save as much as $1.5 billion per year.

Lou Peide, executive secretary-general of the China Mobile Communication Association, told the ICT mobile handset conference on Tuesday that the average production cost of a CDMB-compatible mobile TV handset would be around $10, compared to the $25 of a mobile TV handset that supports the Korea-backed T-DMB standard.

̄Based on the annual sales of 100 million handsets in China, this could translate into a total of $1.5 billion of cost saving for handset makers, ̄ Lou noted.

Luo explained the cost gap mainly lies on the licensing fees of the two standard, While it only costs handset makers 2 yuan ($0.3) of licensing fee for CDMB equipment, licensing fee of each T-DMB chipset is around $7-$8.

^Because of the lefty licensing fee of T-DMB, China decided to develop its own mobile TV standard, ̄ he noted.

Luo said volume production of CDMB chipset was already begun last month, with the concept phones scheduled for launch by end of this year. He said the CDMB workgroup is now considering converging with CMMB, another local mobile TV specs proposed by State Administration of Radio, Film and Television.

CDMB, which supports TD-SCDMA, DAB and local codec AVS, was jointly developed by eight local universities and companies including Beijing Post & Telecommunication University and China Electronics Corporation. Supporting firms include Lenovo, Amoi, Bird and TCL.

Aside from CMMB and CDMB, three other domestically-developed technologies are competing to be chosen as China¨s mobile TV standard. However, the first 3G mobile TV phones in China are using the 3GPP-approved MBMS specification.
