Ecuadorian mobile telephony operators ended the first half of 2007 with 9.25mn subscribers compared to the 7.67mn at end-June 2006, local telecoms supervisory body Suptel said in a statement.
Porta, a unit of Mexican giant Am└rica M┏vil, continued as market leader with 6.19mn clients, followed by Movistar Ecuador, of Spain''s Telef┏nica, with 2.64mn and locally owned Alegro PCS with 412,597.
The total base of
GSM customers at the end of the period was 7.66mn.
Earlier this month Movistar asked local telecoms watchdog Conatel to establish a single method for measuring the country''s mobile subscribers.
Each month, operators provide figures to Suptel detailing the number of subscribers they have.
According to Movistar, each operator uses different measurement criteria, which makes it difficult to get a precise idea of the size of the market and the market share of each operator.
