Taiwan market: MSOs to offer up to 8Mbps cable modem service

Updated:2007/4/10 10:48

Three MSOs (multi-system operators of cable TV) in Taiwan plan to offer broadband cable modem Internet-access service at a download speed of 6Mbps or 8Mbps, in an attempt to compete with FTTx (fiber to the home/building) to be launched by Chunghwa Telecom (CHT), according to industry sources.

The three MSOs are Taiwan Broadband Communications (TBC), China Network Systems (CNS) and Eastern Multimedia (EMC).

TBC will offer 6Mbps cable modem service, with a detailed plan to be announced by the middle of this month, the sources indicated. CNS may launch broadband cable modem service by the end of June, the sources noted. EMC has not yet indicated its time schedule for offering such service.

In addition to the three MSOs, Cable Giant, an independent cable TV operator in northern Taiwan, has offered symmetric cable modem Internet-access service at a fixed monthly charge of NT$1,399 (US$42.40) for 10Mbps download and upload speeds and NT$2,399 for 20Mbps, the sources pointed out. Symmetric access to the Internet is especially suitable for users of Web 2.0-based services, the sources indicated.
