New Zealand TDMA Network to Close This Month

Updated:2007/3/12 09:52

Telecom New Zealand has reminded customers that it is shutting down its older TDMA network at the end of this month, and that remaining 025 network customers have until then to migrate to its CDMA based (027 network) system.

Telecom Head of Consumer Marketing Kevin Bowler said "we''re pulling out all stops to make sure all remaining 025 customers are aware of the need to move to 027".

"We''re concerned that people who still have a 025 phone understand that it will not work after 6pm on Saturday 31 March. This is particularly important for those who keep a 025 phone for emergencies."

Over the past 18 months more than 200,000 customers have migrated from 025 to 027. At Telecom''s half year result in February there were only approximately 20,000 customers left on the 025 network.

Telecom first announced it would be closing the 025 network in early 2004 to provide customers with more than three years'' notice of the change.

"The majority of customers still on 025 are prepaid and use their phones infrequently," Mr Bowler said.

Both the 025 network and 025 phones are increasingly difficult to repair with parts scarce and very few countries still operating a TDMA network.
