Online video market has become the new Highlands of domestic media and Internet companies. After step into the studio entertainment business by Ali pictures, Alibaba began to enter into the online video field.
As the president of Alibaba digital entertainment business group Liu Chunning said, Alibaba would launch online video services in two months. The new service was named "TBO", namely "Tmall Box Office", which will be the same as Netflix and HBO in the USA.
In the content of this service, TBO will purchase contents from China and other countries, but also produced contents of its own. Different from the major domestic competitors, about 90% of the contents in TBO will be paid contents. Liu Chunning said that the users can pay monthly or they can also pay for each content. The other 10% will be free of charge.
Interestingly, Alibaba purchased 16.5% of the shares of Youku-Tudou in last year, which is the largest online video platform in domestic, but it is not clear that whether TBO will form a connection with Youku-Tudou in the future.
