AMD launches "Shanghai" processor

Advanced Micro Devices Inc (AMD), the world's second largest computer chip vendor, unveiled its latest quad-core processor with a code name "Shanghai" in the city, the first computer chip with a name of a Chinese city, the Shanghai Daily reported.

Industry insiders noted the move suggests AMD's intention of enhancing its presence in the Chinese market in server computer and high-end personal computer sectors.

The U.S. chip maker said the 45-nanometer quad-core AMD Opteron processor, mainly designed for computer servers, improves performance by 35% and cut power consumption by 35% compared with its process processor Barcelona.

Vanoy Wang, vice president of AMD China, said the new processor will meet the demand of customers for high performance, low consumption, virtualization as well as investment protection.

AMD's partners from Dell Inc, Hewlett-Packard Co (HP), IBM, Huawei Technologies Co Ltd, and etc. participated in the launch conference.
