TCL global sales of LCD TV surge 237.90% in Aug

Shenzhen-listed TCL Corp<000100>, a major television and mobile phone manufacturer in China, announced that the company's sales of liquid crystal display (LCD) TV worldwide rocketed 237.90% year-on-year in August to 292, 256 units. The figures included 86,900 domestic sales, up 42% from a year earlier. Its global sales of traditional cathode ray tube (CRT) TVs dipped 23.5% year-on-year while sales in China climbed 21.90% year-on-year during the month, maintaining its leading position in the domestic market. The company's telecoms division sold about 1.11 million mobile handsets last month, up 3.66% over the corresponding period of last year, among which 240,000 were sold in China, up 78.09% from a year earlier. Its white goods division had mixed results with sales of washing machines up 20.95% year-on-year and sales of air conditioners and freezers and fridges down 29.63% and 7.2%, respectively. US-based flat panel TV surveyor Display Search said earlier that it expected China's flat screen TV market to grow at a compound rate of 29% during 2007-2012 and estimated that mainland producers will produce 17 million flat screen TVs in 2008, including 15.5 million LCD TVs and 1.5 million plasma TVs. It produced 9.6 million flat screen TVs last year, including 8.8 million LCD TVs, up 83% year-on-year, and 1.5 million plasma TVs, up 43% year-on-year.
