Primus Telecom offer shaped mobile broadband
Updated:2008/8/28 16:43
There has been a new mobile broadband service launched by Primus Telecom which will not charge excess on your data when you have reached your data allowance, it will be speed-shaped once your limit is reached. CEO of Primus, Ravi Bhatia said in a statement “Today’s consumers want the freedom to be online at any time and the existing mobile broadband pricing packages have potential risk for excessive and unexpected download charges, often amounting to several hundred dollars in a month”. So, once you have reached your monthly data allowance, for the remainder of the monthly billing period it will be shaped at 64Kbps. If we take a look at the Primus speedster site, we can see that practical speeds for the service will be 384Kbps to 3.6Mbps for HSDPA devices, 200Kbps to 384Kbps for 3G and 20Kbps to 40Kbps for 2G. Primus is offering 6GB for $39.95 per month with a free modem on a 24-month contract as a special offer for September. Andrew Sims, General Manager of Products and Marketing said in a statement, “In our experience, 6GB of data allowance per month is more than sufficient for an average internet user,” There are other price plans going live on the website this afternoon, these will be $29.95 for 1GB, or $19.95 bundled with a mobile and $79.95 for 12GB, or $69.95 with a mobile. The product uses Optus’ mobile network, and if the customer wishes for extra data allowance they can go on-line and by it using their account toolbox. The company have made some changes to introduce the new shaping, they moved away from a complete resale off Optus products, and they are now chandelling everything through its own network and doing a lot of the provisioning work itself, So basically Primus are less reliant on Optus. The service will be provided using the Huawei E220 modem, which runs on 2,100MHz.
