LG debuts first Android 2.2 smartphone through cooperation with CHT

LG Electronics on November 2 unveiled the Optium One P500, its first Android 2.2 smartphone, for bundled sale in the Taiwan market through cooperation with Chunghwa Telecom (CHT) at a retail price without contract of NT$10,900 (US$354), according to LG's Taiwan subsidiary. LG had launched earlier the Optium GT540 for the low-end segment and will introduce another Android model in December, aiming to reach 10% share of the Taiwan smartphone market.

The Optium One P500 will target the entry-level and mid-range segments and will be available globally in 90 countries.

In related news, worldwide smartphone sales in the third quarter increased 95% on year to 80.9 million units, of which Android-based models represented a 25% share or more than 20 million units, up 13 folds from a year ago, according to research firm Canalys.
