MediaTek Ready to Offer Fuller Range of Cellular Chips
Updated:2008/11/27 14:19
MediaTek Inc., Taiwan`s No.1 fabless house in terms of revenue, is ready to offer fuller range of mobile phone chips. The company recently sent samples chips for TD-SCDMA and WCDAM mobile phones for validations with customers. Now it is mulling to introduce chips for smart phones running on Window Mobile OS next year and has started developing smart phone application processors (Aps) based on ARM`s technology. According to handset suppliers in mainland China, MediaTek has sent samples of its dual-band chip MT6268 for WCDMA and EDGE mobile phones for verifications with several telecom-service providers and handset suppliers in the mainland. Its AD6905 chip for TD-SCDMA phones has gone into ZTE Corp.`s phones. Datang Telecom Technology Co. is verifying its MT6909 chip for TD-HSUPA phones. Industry watchers pointed out that such deals have enabled MediaTek to firmly secure shares in China`s 3G phone chip market. They noted that MediaTek had seized significant shares of the market for chips designed specifically for phones for emerging economies like mainland China, where the trend in handset market is shifting to smart phones, prompting MediaTek to focus more on chips for such phones. The company is estimated to ship around 15% less base-band chips this quarter than the last, when the company shipped 75-80 million sets. However, annual shipments are estimated to be 240 million sets, surging around 60% from last year. Changes in MediaTek`s 2008 Revenue & Handset Chip Shipment
