Samsung selects RFMD PAs to support new 3G handsets
Updated:2008/9/27 15:31
RF Micro Devices Inc (RFMD) of Greensboro, NC, USA says that its power amplifier (PA) products will support more than 10 upcoming Samsung 3G handsets, and that it anticipates volume shipments of the products to commence in the December 2008 quarter. RFMD will supply Samsung with Wideband CDMA/High Speed Packet Access (WCDMA/HSPA) PAs and EDGE PAs. Samsung’s new 3G phones include the SGH-L700, the SGH-L770 and the SGH-G400. The SGH-L700 slider phone features a music player, FM radio, streaming Bluetooth audio, a 2-megapixel camera and a separate, dedicated camera for video conferencing. The SGH-G400 features Bluetooth 2.0, a 2.2" 262K color screen, a microSD expansion slot and a 5-megapixel camera with auto-focus. According to market research firm Gartner Inc’s report “Dataquest Insight: Market Share for Mobile Devices, 2Q08", Samsung’s mobile phone sales reached 45.7 million units (15.2% market share) in Q2/2008. RFMD says that the new phones represent a significant expansion of its 3G shipments to Samsung. The firm began volume shipments into earlier Samsung 3G handset models in the June 2008 quarter. "We are extremely pleased to support a growing number of Samsung 3G handsets," said Eric Creviston, president of RFMD's Cellular Products Group. "We enjoy very strong business with Samsung in EDGE handsets, and we look forward to expanding our relationship with Samsung as we supply our innovative 3G front ends into their feature-rich, next-generation handsets. We are particularly enthusiastic about ongoing design activity in support of Samsung's future handset platform development efforts."
