China's Mobile Phone Shipments Down 25.5%

CAICT (China Academy of Information and Communications Technology) released the May handset market report of China on June 9.

There were 37.37 million mobile phones shipped in May with a 25.5% decline and 127 new models released, climbing 8.5% year over year.

China's domestic market shipped 197 million handsets and 468 new models came out in the first five months of 2017, decreasing 5.9 percent and 25.1 percent respectively.

Accounting for 94.9 percent, 4G mobile phone shipments reduced 24.9 percent to 35.461 million with 104 new models which increased 2 percent YoY in May. The shipped all-network phones represented 83.2 percent of the shipped 4G handsets mentioned before.

By the end of May in this year, 4G mobile phone shipments have been down 2.5 percent to 187 million and 384 new models have been rolled out with a 27.1 percent YoY decline, accounting for 94.8 percent.

The domestic-brand handset shipments fell 24.7 percent to 34.231 million in May with 120 new models, and accounted for 91.6 percent of the mobile phone shipments in China over the same period.

During the five months this year, China has shipped 178 million domestic-brand mobile phones, down 3.6 percent YoY, representing 90.3 percent of the shipments in China over the same period.

The smartphone shipments decreased 25.3 percent to 35.381 million in May year over year, accounting for 94.7 percent. Android smartphone shipments reached 29.613 million in May.
