ZTE Launches First Symmetric 100G PON Prototype

Updated:2017/2/16 11:37

ZTE Corporation (0763.HK / 000063.SZ), a major international provider of telecommunications, enterprise and consumer technology solutions for the Mobile Internet, has launched a symmetric 100G passive optical network (PON) prototype, the first satisfying the latest international standards among similar products. ZTE verified its solution in the next-generation PON demonstration network of Shanghai University. The results showed that the symmetric 100G PON optical line terminal (OLT) system and optical network unit (ONU), which is developed based on the ZTE commercial product platform, is operating stably with good performance. The breakthrough in the core technology marks that ZTE once again leads and promotes the research and progress of next generation PON products.

ZTE has partnered with Shanghai University's Key Laboratory of Specialty Fibre Optics and Optical Access Networks for many years. During this time, ZTE completed the research and verification of "Functional Verification and Industrialization of User Transceiver Modules," part of the "40 Gbit/s Optical Access Core Photoelectron Components and Modules" project of the National High Technology Research and Development Program of China. ZTE also jointly applied for the Shanghai Science and Technology Achievements Transformation Project: "Research on Key Technologies of the 100G-EPON Optical Access Network and System Development". ZTE has driven continuous innovation in the 100G PON field, and is the first telecommunication enterprise that has made breakthroughs in the core technology. ZTE has verified symmetric single-wavelength 25G and four-wavelength 100G PON systems, and has successfully implemented smooth evolution from 40G PON to 100G PON.

With the rapid development of 4K ultra high definition (UHD), 8K UHD, VR, AR, and IoT technologies, there is a growing demand for bandwidth. The PON technology, which enables higher bandwidth, has become a research highlight in 10G PON in the optical access network field. The evolution of next-generation PON technologies is implemented in the following two directions: single-wavelength speed improvement from single-wavelength 1/2.5G to single-wavelength 10/25/50/100G; and multi-wavelength PON superposition. For example, time and wavelength-division multiplexed (TWDM) PON implemented through superposition of four 10G PONs, and 100G-EPON implemented through superposition of four 25G PONs. ZTE has achieved outstanding progress in both single-wavelength and multi-wavelength innovation.

As a leader in this field, ZTE has always championed innovation and cooperated with the upstream and downstream of the industry chain to promote the development and application of PON technologies. ZTE has pioneered new concepts and technology, particularly in the next-generation PON technologies and market applications. ZTE will continue R&D in this field and help customers construct "Ultra-fast, Flexible and Intelligent" broadband networks to gain the full benefits of next generation PONs.
