Fruitful 5G Standardization Meeting & Debut of Chinese Friends of 3GPP in Nanjing

Updated:2016/6/15 09:49

The 3GPP RAN1/2/3/4/5, GEARAN and SA2 working group meeting was held successfully from May 23rd to 27th in Nanjing, jointly attended by China Mobile, ZTE, CAICT, Datang Telecom, Huawei, Lenovo, OPPO, coolpad, Ericsson, Samsung, Nokia and Qualcomm as the first show-up of the Chinese Friends of 3GPP (CF3). This meeting is unprecedented in scale and well organized, with fruitful achievements. As the first meeting organized by the Chinese Friends of 3GPP, it has won widespread praises from the 3GPP bureau and delegates from different companies.

With a registration of about 4000 and an attendance of over 3000 delegates, this meeting is one of the largest working group meeting in 3GPP history. Through thorough and in-depth discussions on LTE evolution, the fifth-generation mobile communication technology (5G), and Narrow Band Internet of Things (NB-IoT), this meeting has made significant progress.

The standardization progress of LTE evolution is solid and steady. The LTE evolution technology "LTE-A-Pro" has three major goals, namely performance improvement, efficient use of resources, and vertical industry penetration. It is confirmed that about 20 research projects are steadily carried out, and significant progress has been made in technologies such as VoLTE enhancement, 3D-MIMO, multi-user interference suppression, and light connections.

The fifth generation communication technology (5G) is the hottest topic. This meeting is the second 3GPP working group session for 5G discussions. Different from testing the waters at the first session, 3GPP members invest heavily in this meeting and over 1500 contributions have been submitted. After four days of intense discussions, finally a number of breakthrough consensuses have been achieved in aspects of performance simulation evaluation assumptions, physical-layer frame structure design, high-frequency antenna and channel modeling, high-level protocol stack and basic functions, and the overall network architecture. In terms of networks, a big progress is made in network slicing, new mobility management, QoS design, session management, modularization of networking functions, and interface design. As a landmark, the first joint meeting for the 5G radio access network and the core network has been held. China Mobile, as the leading company of the 5G network architecture project, introduced and summarized the study progress. Through orderly and intense discussions in each working group, a number of consensuses have been reached, effectively ensuring the overall development of 5G standardization and end-to-end technology synchronization.

Narrow Band Internet of Things (NB-IoT) is another focus and hot topic, which has come to a successful end in the meeting. After three days of intense discussions, with the principle of putting aside disputes, the key specifications of NB-IoT have been finalized, marking the end of the overall standardization of NB-IoT and the realization of the official final product.

This meeting is the debut of Chinese Friends of 3GPP, taking them almost one year to plan the meeting, select venues, raise funds, and implement this event. With the support of the MIIT, CMCC, ZTE and other 3GPP individual members in China, the meeting was finally held successfully in the name of CF3. The successful holding of this meeting not only makes great contributions to the 3GPP standardization work, but also shows a united, conscientious, efficient, and pragmatic image of China's telecommunication industry to the world. The Chinese union is rapidly rising in the formulation of global communication standards. The CF3 is bound to take this opportunity as the starting point to make greater contributions to the international standardization of China's telecommunication industry.
