Intel sides with Google over Microsoft

Updated:2014/4/21 14:29

Intel reported stronger-than-expected first-quarter results Tuesday, barely beating Wall Street estimates, but credited chips used in data centers among other business unit boosts for the gains.

Intel's net income totaled $1.95 billion for the quarter, or 38 cents a share, down 5 percent from a year ago. Analysts had expected 37 cents a share.

Revenue winners for Intel also included the Internet of Things market accounting for $482 million, which the company said was up 32 percent year over year.

Intel CEO Brian Krzanich said the chip maker had set "an aggressive goal" to ship 40 million tablet systems on chips this year.

"I'm happy to say we've tallied more than 90 designs on Android and Windows and shipped 5 million units in the first quarter, placing us squarely on track to that goal," said Krzanich.

The CEO conceded that the vast majority of those units would be for Google's Android platform.

"Our mix of [operating systems] reflects pretty much what you see in the marketplace… it's probably something on the order of 90 percent Android [to] 80 percent Android, 10 percent to 20 percent Windows.

Our percentages look very much like the marketplace. So, if Windows continues to grow and gain traction I think our percentage would just align directly to that."
