Huawei Chosen to Build First 3G Network in Costa Rica

Shenzhen-headquartered telecommunications equipment provider Huawei Technologies Co., Ltd. (Huawei) has been selected to deploy the first 3G network in Costa Rica for Costa Rican Electricity Institute (ICE), announced the state-run electrical company recently.

The USD 235 million contract, which Huawei won in a bidding fight against Ericsson and ZTE Corporation, will be submitted for approval from the local authorities.

The to-be-established 3G high speed mobile phone network will enable ICE to offer more advanced services tailored to users across the country, said Pedro Pablo Quiros, executive president for the Costa Rican company.

The US-Central American-Dominican Republic Free Trade Agreement (CAFTA-DR) came into force in Costa Rica on January 1, 2009, allowing overseas telecommunications companies to run business in the country freely and posing great threat to ICE.

The Shenzhen company's product lineup includes mobile communications, next generation networks, access networks, switching networks, optical networks, multimedia communications, distribution frames and handset products.
