Qualcomm Incorporated, a wireless provider of GPS and Assisted GPS technology platforms, reportedly has been licensed to distribute a Skyhook Wireless WiFi (News - Alert) Positioning System and incorporate the technology into its gpsOne positioning technology platforms.

Skyhook’s WPS solution will deliver WiFi positioning for gpsOne and enable hybrid location positioning capabilities on select future platforms.

The Skyhook WPS requires no new hardware, works indoors and outdoors and provides an instant location. The software-only system produces accurate location information by detecting WiFi access points and comparing them against a known database of geo-located points.

According to Jason Bremner, senior director of cellular products for Qualcomm (News - Alert), with more than 400 million gpsOne enabled handsets in the market, Qualcomm’s technology enables the vast majority of location-aware mobile devices on the market today.

“Combining Skyhook’s technology with our gpsOne offering will enable users to obtain location fixes much more rapidly and provide for a more ubiquitous LBS experience whether indoors, outside or in complex environments such as urban areas,” Bremner said.

Qualcomm works in developing and delivering innovative digital wireless communications products and services based on CDMA and other advanced technologies.

Mobile devices such as mobile phones, laptops, PDAs and fleet management systems are increasingly deploying multi-mode GPS and WiFi. They provide enhanced positioning availability and accuracy for the growing number of location-based applications and services.

According to Jed Rice, vice president of market development for Skyhook Wireless (News - Alert), the company is focused on developing leading edge positioning capabilities.

“We look forward to working with Qualcomm to enable our joint customers to deliver location determination capabilities that will exceed end-user expectations of speed, accuracy and availability,” Rice said.
