Wateen and Motorola sign WiMAX expansion deal

Pakistani wireless broadband provider Wateen Telecom has inked a deal with Motorola for the expansion of its WiMAX network infrastructure, Business Intelligence Middle East is reporting. Under the agreement the capacity of the existing network will be doubled, with coverage extended to reach a total of 22 cities, and a potential subscriber base of 30 million. Tariq Malik, CEO of Wateen said, ‘Wateen Telecom was the first company in the world to roll out an 802.16e WiMAX network on a nationwide scale. Today’s announcement confirms our commitment to WiMAX and continued investment in our network to ensure our customers receive the most advanced services using the latest OFDM-based WiMAX solutions.’ The deployment of hardware is reportedly already underway, and the project is expected to be completed by the end of 4Q 2008.
